Plastic abrasive media is great for many applications, and Media Blast & Abrasives has a long history of manufacturing cabinets models specifically for plastic abrasive media. We are sharing these seven fun facts about plastic abrasive.
Seven Fun Facts About Plastic Abrasive Media
Fact Number One
Media Blast® used plastic to solve a problem for Callaway Golf suppliers using plastic abrasive.
Fact Number Two
Would we blast the ceiling of an old wood building with plastic? Our answer is normally NO, but we made an exception when we blasted a wooden blind stock, bass wood, for no dust finish years ago. Different abrasives produce open or closed surfaces. We always ask users if they plan to paint, stain, or do nothing after it is blasted to determine the best processing method.
Fact Number Three
Media Blast has always worked in the Medical Field because we always made Wet Blasting Cabinets, even when our competitors did not. Why? Because we knew how!
Fact Number Four
The popularity of using plastic media was driven by the US Government. Although plastic media has existed before that, it wasn’t widely used. Increasing pollution control rules and regulation made acids and other chemicals very expensive to use and dispose of.
Fact Number Five
No two abrasive blasting applications are ever the same, abrasive recycle rates vary based on how you’re using your cabinet. This is absolutely true for plastic as well as any other abrasive.
Fact Number Six
You may see and hear people talk about blasting vehicles with Soda, Plastic and even Walnut Shells. Do not use Walnuts on fiberglass cars or boats because the oils from the shell will soak into impact fractures in the fiberglass. Even a great surface primer will stand up and run away from those areas. Stick to plastic abrasive media to avoid this issue.
Fact Number Seven
The most popular Plastic Abrasive Media is Type II, which scores 3.5 hardness. 30-40 mesh is most popular for blasting cabinets that recycle.
