When you search online for industrial abrasive blasting cabinets, what you find is not necessarily what you searched for. This is because search engines serve paid advertisements ahead of organic results. Additionally, advertisers often use Industrial terminology to describe cabinets that cannot properly delivery production capacity results. The result is Light duty hobbyist equipment appearing alongside, or even above, genuine industrial machinery, and Dry machinery appearing when searching for Wet Blasting Cabinets. Often customers are finding the most advertised products, not necessarily the best one for their application.
Media Blast® is committed to cutting through this noise to provide honest, one-on-one conversations. We’re a manufacturer making all the different abrasive blasting cabinet models, from Light Duty to Full Industrial, in both Wet and Dry abrasive delivery.
Understanding Daily Duty Cycle, DDC
What Is DDC?
Daily Duty Cycle (DDC) refers to the total operational time abrasive blasting cabinets are designed to handle within a single working day, and whether or not the machine can withstand daily use. These cabinets require a different type of construction to withstand high processing volume and deferred maintenance schedules.
The Light Duty Trap
| Cabinet Type | Designed DDC | Typical Daily Use |
| Light Duty / Hobbyist | 30 minutes per day | Occasional, light use, non-daily |
| True Industrial | Full shift operation | Continuous production |
What Happens When You Exceed Light Duty DDC, time mentioned above?
When a light duty cabinet is pushed into heavy daily usage, or continuous use, we typically see:
- Slow cleaning times
- Undersized blowers
- Inefficient separator reclaimers
- Clogged dust collector filters
- A filthy work environment
The unfortunate reality, is a light duty cabinet used all day to clean a single part is not saving you money. It is actually driving up labor costs and slowly bleeding your profit margins.
How To Check If A Blasting Cabinet Is Genuinely Industrial
So how do you know if Industrial abrasive blasting cabinets are truly industrial? These 4 tips can help buyers protect against purchasing a cabinet that cannot withstand production capacity output.
1. Check the Blasting Gun Size
Time is money! True industrial cabinets produce the fastest part output, usually using the largest gun size available with the required high volume of compressed air.
2. Check the Dust Collector Blower CFM Rating
Did you know horsepower at the engine differs from horsepower at the driven wheels? The same is true for blowers! Blower ratings on paper differ from operating the complete blasting cabinet – don’t be fooled by the paper.
3. Check the Separator Reclaimer Efficiency
The more air is being moved through an abrasive blasting cabinet, the more efficient the separator reclaimer needs to be. And be aware that simple gravity allowing abrasive to fall back into the cabinet hopper can legally be described as abrasive recycling on a specification sheet. Though it is technically true, it is NOT going to meet the demands of a production facility.
- Check The Dust Collector Filter Area
A larger filter area requires a more efficient dust collection at higher air velocities to maintain good abrasive blasting cabinet visibility.
